Happy Halloween

Happy Halloween!!

I am so sorry that I have been MIA.  I came down with a sinus infection last week and did not get any crafting or scrapbooking completed.

I am hoping to play catch up this week. I have a couple of Thanksgiving projects that I want to complete and then I need to catch up on my project life layouts.

I hope you all have a Happy Halloween and don't eat too much candy!!

Here is the pumpkin that my daughter and husband carved.  I love the grin.

Emily is 10 and has decided this year that she wants to give out candy and not go trick or treating.  At what age did your children stop trick or treating? Makes me kind of sad but then she is so excited about giving out candy. She already has it poured into a bag and it is sitting by the front door.

We found Emily this cute glittery pumpkin shirt to wear to school today. She could also donate a $1 to charity and wear a hat all day. We found this really cute turkey hat at Target in the dollar section.

Too cute!!!

Have a great day!!

Candy Corn Pretzel Rods

I want to share with you these wonderful yummy candy corn pretzel rods.

Emily needed a food item to take to her school for market day.

I saw candy corn pretzel rods on pinterest here.

These were super easy to make and they are delicious.

If you need a quick snack for an event, these are perfect and cute too!!

Here are the ingredients:
Pretzel Rods
Candy Melts in White and Orange colors
Yellow Sprinkles (I could only find a mix of orange/yellow/white)
Pretzel clear bags (optional)

First you melt the white candy melts and then dip your pretzels in covering about 3/4 of the pretzels.
Let them cool and dry.

Next dip the pretzels in the orange candy melts covering about 1/2 of the white. Then immediately sprinkle the colored sprinkles on top.

Let these cool and dry again and you are done!

Store in a container.

We had to bag these up for school so I used the clear pretzel holder bags from Michael's.

I made some cute tags from Halloween scrapbook paper and twine to wrap around the top of the bag for some added decoration.

We made 20 of these pretzels and Emily sold all of them after giving one to each of her teachers.  Luckily we kept some extras at home to enjoy!!

Thank you for looking! See you next time.

Fall Outdoor Decorations

Hi there! I just wanted to share my fall outdoor decorations today.

I keep my outdoor decorations simple.

This is my front porch. I love to put pumpkins in my planters. I also have three smaller pumpkins on my glider rocker. I have a wreath on the door and a couple of mums.

Here are some close-up's.

The wreath is from Hobby Lobby.

This scarecrow came from Hobby Lobby.

I got this pretty orange mum and owl planter from Wal-Mart.

In my front yard, I have a few elements that I add to the flower bed.

I bought this wooden pumpkin sign years ago at a craft fair. It has held up well over the years.

This is another fun sign that I bought years ago from Hobby Lobby.

The other thing that I love to do every year is fill up my bird bath with small pumpkins.  I love this look!!

I always have a flag in my front yard. Here is my fall flag. This came from Michael's.

Here is an overview of the front lawn.

For my backyard, I have these fun pumpkins and mum on my patio table.

My daughter had fun painting these pumpkins.

Here she is hard at work painting the pumpkins.

We have never painted pumpkins before but I kept seeing all of the cute painted pumpkins on Pinterest. I grabbed a couple of small pumpkins from Wal-Mart while grocery shopping and then we raided my stash of paints and stencils and Emily got busy. It was a fun project and hopefully a new tradition in our house.

I also have a flag pole that comes off of our pergola and you can see the flag inside the house so I always love changing out this flag. This is my pretty fall flag from Michael's. I will change it out next week for a fun Halloween flag.

Here is inside looking out at the flag.

Those are my outdoor fall decorations. Thanks for looking! Leave me a comment if you have your outdoor decorations posted on your blog. I would love to see them!!

Fun with Color - Spray Painting Lanterns

I decided a couple of lanterns that were on my fireplace needed some color love.

They were originally a grey/metal color and just needed something. Have you ever felt that way about your decor?

Here it is with a touch of color!

I decided to spray paint them with some Rust-Oleum Satin Colonial Red spray paint.

Don't you just love the difference a little spray paint can make? Wow!

Before painting, my husband carefully removed the glass.

Then we got busy spray painting and then I used some 220 grit sand paper to sand the edges for a more distressed look.

I love the pop of color that they add to my fireplace this year.

Don't be afraid to change up your decorations with spray paint. You can always go back over it with another color if you don't like it.

You can see my blog post here for the fireplace cover and here for the canvas pumpkins that you also see in the picture above if interested in those decorations.
Thanks for looking! See you next time.

Handmade Fireplace Cover - DIY Faux Gate

Yesterday when I shared my Fall Mantel I told you that I would tell you how my husband made us our new fireplace cover.

Here we go....

This was my inspiration picture from aka design.

I instantly fell in love with this faux distressed gate on their mantle. They have wonderful projects on their blog. They handmade this piece with srap wood and they even made the mantel that it is sitting on.

I knew immediately I wanted this piece for my living room however I wanted it to be a fireplace cover versus something that would sit on my mantel.

I showed this to my husband and off we went to Home Depot. We didn't have any scrap wood hanging around so here are the supplies we used.

Supplies:
Fence Slats in size 5/8"x5-1/2"x6' Fir Gold Stain (7 boards)
Minwax Dark Walnut Stain
Decorative black handle and hinges

Tools  and Supplies used (not pictured)
Compound Miter Saw
Sander
220 grit sand paper
Wood Screws
Drill and drill bits

First he cut 5 pieces of the wood at 32 inces. (main body of the gate)

Then he cut 2 boards at 38 1/4 inces.(cross pieces)

For the feet, he cut the 2 pieces at 6 inches by 5 1/4 inches. (from the leftover boards)

Secure 4 boards to 2 cross pieces with wood screws from behind that are not too long so that you don't go through the front of the project.

Take the remaining 32 inch board and screw it on to the bottom back side. Attach feet to this board with more wood screws going through the bottom of the feet.

Then sand with 220 grit sandpaper to bring out the woodgrain and remove the fuzzy texture of this wood. Apply two coats of stain with a rag. Use the wipe on/wipe off technique.  Let dry between coats.

Final step is to attach the hardware.

Here is a before picture without a cover.

Picture with new cover.

Here is a closeup of the feet.

It gets even better when you add decorations!

I love this in front of my fireplace!!

To see how I made the altered canvas pumpkins, please see my post here.

I can't wait to decorate it throughout the season with a banner or wreath, etc.

Thank you to aka designs (Shannon and Dean) for giving me the inspiration to make this wonderful project.
