Nautical Themed Rolled Paper Topiary - Summer Mantel 2013

I have been working on designing and creating my summer mantel for 2013.
I decided to go with a nautical theme this year.

My first project was this nautical themed rolled paper topiary.

I have made these before for my home decor. They are so easy and fun to make that I had to make another one for my summer mantel.

Here are my supplies:
Paper Collection from Fancy Pants called Down by the Shore
Topiary (from Hobby Lobby)
Paper Trimmer
Bone Folder
Straight Pins (with small head)

I cut my paper into 1/2 inch by 12 inch strips. I use my bone folder to curl the paper.
The I use a straight pin to pin the paper into the topiary.
Keep curling and pinning until you have the desired fullness for the topiary.

Here is a close-up picture. I like mine very full and fluffy.

I loved the colors in this paper collection and designed the rest of my mantel using these colors.

This project is easy but time consuming. This is a good project to work on while watching TV or a  movie.

The chicken wire basket is the one I have been using for all of my topiaries. It came from Hobby Lobby.
I use my leftover curls to fill the basket so that you don't see the bottom of the topiary.

I will be back with more summer mantel projects this week and will do a video tour once I have shared all of my projects.

Thanks for looking!!

See you on the next post.

  1. Shelly, the topiary is adorable. Very neat that you change the themes on your mantel for the seasons and holidays.

  2. Awesome Shelly! I think I am going to have to borrow this idea for my entry table! :)
